'We've been expecting it,' Macy reveals in a new interview.

AceShowbiz - William H. Macy was far from surprised by his Shameless co-star Emmy Rossum's decision to leave the show, because it's the "right choice" for her career.

The actress shocked fans on Thursday, August 30 by revealing she was walking away from the hit U.S. version of the British drama, in which she has portrayed Fiona Gallagher for the past eight years.

Show producer John Wells subsequently confirmed her departure at the end of the upcoming ninth season, insisting she will "forever be part of the Shameless family", and now Emmy's TV dad has offered up his thoughts on the news, admitting he thought the actress would be moving on sooner rather than later, because she is in her prime.

"We've been expecting it," Macy tells Entertainment Weekly. "I tell you, when you get to season nine and you think of (whether) to keep going, it's daunting. It's hard not to think of: 'What would my life be post-Shameless?' And part of it is very frightening and part of it is very exciting.

"She's young and I think she's made the right choice...," he adds. "She wants to branch out. Plus, she just got married. I wish her well. I can't wait to see what she's going to do next".

Emmy celebrated her first wedding anniversary with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail in May.

Season nine of Shameless premieres in the U.S. on 9 September.
