The upcoming Joker movie reportedly is targeting an R-rating as it may feature nudity in some smaller female roles.

AceShowbiz - Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" origin movie is likely taking a gritty direction. The upcoming film is reportedly targeting an R-rating as Geeks Worldwide suggests that the movie may feature nudity in smaller female roles.

While the R-rating is not confirmed yet, the site speculates that Todd Phillips might be casting actresses to play strippers in the film. It is said that the movie may explore the real-life world of stand-up comedians, who work in strip clubs and do a type of stand-up which is called "burlesque comedy."

Bryan Callen, who was recently added to the cast of the movie, may have supported this report. He said in a recent episode of his podcast, "I’m doing the 'Joker'. I was offered a part. That'll be fun, but I think it's only a couple days. Play an aging dancer, stripper."

He stopped short before sharing too much, saying, "I don't want to go into the details. I can't go into the details, but just know it's gonna be good. And I hope my psoriasis is flaring cause that'll be very funny. I'll be in a Speed-O, I can't wait. I have some ideas for it."

Should the report be true, the R-rating approach isn't completely shocking since Phillips, who is on board as director, is known for his works on R-rated comedy films, such as "The Hangover" movies, "War Dogs" and "Due Date". He recently directed drama musical "A Star Is Born" remake, which is also rated R.

The upcoming Joker movie will tell an origin story of the signature villain of Batman, which is described as a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale of a man disregarded by society who becomes the ultimate supervillain.

Joaquin Phoenix is cast in the title role, with Frances Conroy, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron landing supporting roles. Phillips writes the script along with Scott Silver, while Martin Scorsese is set to produce with Phillips and Emma Tillinger Koskoff.

The movie eyes an October 4, 2019 release and may begin production on September 22, with filming lasting until around December-February of next year.
