The 'American Idol' alum returns to the stage for Broadway show 'Waitress' after taking a break from the musical to mourn the loss of her father.

AceShowbiz - Singer/actress Katharine McPhee has dedicated her Broadway return to her late father, Daniel, who died earlier this month.

The 34-year-old took to her Twitter account on Tuesday, July 24, just before she hit the stage for musical Waitress, and told followers she would be performing for her dad.

Posting a shot of herself backstage, she wrote: "dad, this one's for you. here we go @WaitressMusical #GiveEmHellKid (sic)."

The hashtag was a reference to one of her father's favourite sayings, which Katharine previously recalled as she shared her heartbreak over his death in an emotional post on social media.

"It is with heavy heart that I share that my sweet sweet Papa left this earth yesterday morning," she told fans. "We as a family are completely heartbroken and devastated."

"He was my biggest fan, my biggest champion, always telling me to 'Give em hell kid!' He was so kind and caring and made sure we knew how much he loved us. Not sure my heart will ever be the same."

McPhee revealed her dad was too ill to see her onstage in her Broadway debut, and added, "I hope he can watch it (show) in peace and from up above."

The loss prompted Katharine to take a break from the musical, initially telling fans on Twitter she was dealing with a "family emergency".

The former American Idol star, who is engaged to musician David Foster, wrote: "Hey my Waitress fans... I'm so so sorry to inform you I will be out this weekend from the shows. I'm having to fly back to LA right now for a family emergency. It breaks my heart to disappoint anyone. Sending all my love."

McPhee made her debut in singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles' hit musical at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in April. Her run was scheduled to come to a close on 17 June, but she agreed to stay with the show until 19 August.
