In pictures which are posted on Instagram, the actress can be seen proudly displaying her scars in a bikini.

AceShowbiz - Actress Sarah Hyland marked Independence Day by posing in a bikini and proudly displaying her surgical scars.

The "Modern Family" star took to Instagram on Wednesday, July 4, to share several posts, in which she showed off her body.

"#scarsondisplay," she captioned one of the images.

The 27 year old has endured a series of health complications and underwent a kidney transplant in 2012. Hyland was also hospitalised last month after suffering an unknown medical issue.

"Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle and feelin cute. This time for #nationalselfieday I've decided to share my truth. As painful as it is," she wrote alongside a photo of herself during her battle with the illness. "So here is my face that was torn from work against my will. But I'm very grateful it was. Health should always come first. #stayhealthymyfriends."

She now appears to be recovering well - and in good spirits.

"Actual candid before a 'photo'," she wrote alongside another July 4th snap of herself sipping a cocktail.

The brunette beauty's boyfriend, Wells Adams, was not with her for the celebration but he addressed her in a sweet message on Instagram Story.

"God.Bless.America," he captioned an image of his love sporting patriotic sunglasses. "I miss you @sarahhyland."

Hyland's public celebration of her body comes months after she addressed the scrutiny surrounding her form last year - in a candid tweet, she referenced the hurtful comments social media users have made and explained that her frail appearance is related to having kidney dysplasia.

"'Eat a burger', 'your head is bigger than your body and that's disgusting'," she wrote. "And you're right...! No one's head should be bigger than their body but considering I've basically been on bed rest for the past few months, I've lost a lot of muscle mass. My circumstances have put me in a place where I'm not in control of what my body looks like. So I strive to be as healthy as possible, as everyone should."
