The 'Saturday Night Live' alum and his then-girlfriend Cazzie were 'on a break' in early May before she left for Africa, during when his relationship with Ariana blossomed.

AceShowbiz - Pete Davidson and his ex-girlfriend Cazzie David did not officially split yet when he started a relationship with Ariana Grande. Sources close to the newly engaged couple tells TMZ that the comedian and his then-girlfriend were "on a break" in early May.
As commonly accepted, the term "break" means that a relationship is not over for good and leaves the door open for a reunion. But during the break in Pete and Cazzie's relationship, he got closer with Ariana and they hit it off.
It's now clear why Cazzie seemed surprised about Pete and Ariana dating reports, which surfaced shortly before her return following a trip to Africa. She appeared to shade the new couple's relationship as she posted on Instagram, "Been in Africa what'd I miss?"
Many celebrities were rooting for the 24-year-old daughter of actor/comedian Larry David. "You're Amal," Amy Schumer jokingly commented on the picture, referring to George Clooney's wife Amal Clooney.
"You're so hot omg," Lorde also wrote on the comment section. Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's actress daughter Tallulah Willis hilariously joked, "Like this is the new background of my phone." Actress Zoe Saldana and musician Jack Antonoff didn't leave any comment but they liked the post.
Though so, Cazzie's not bitter about Pete and Ariana's relationship as she was fully aware about Ariana at that point, TMZ reported.
Pete, meanwhile, has been over the moon about his engagement to Ariana. The couple got engaged earlier this month after several weeks of dating. The comedian recently gushed in an Instagram post showing her engagement ring, "u know what you'd dream it be like ? it's better than that."
