The Chainsmokers is giving fans an insight into how they deal with stardom through the music video for "Everybody Hates Me". The video, which was premiered on April 2, features the record producer duo grappling with the sad truth that fame comes at a cost.
Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart open the music video by racing through a tunnel in an open-top Jeep. They then arrive at a pool party where Alex wanders through a haunting group of party-goers while Andrew goes underwater to belt out the song.
As the video reaches its climax, the pair are seen dousing a car in gasoline and burning it down with a fire. There is also a scene where Alex and Andrew perform the song along with their tour drummer, Matt McGuire.
Rory Kramer, the director of the music video, takes to Instagram to share the meaning behind each scene in the music video. "Scene 1 the tunnel scene, is like the retro future where @alexpall and @drewtaggart are driving and seen looking back at what could be memories, regret, or something haunting them, but they push forward and chase dreams," he writes.
"Scene 2 the pool party," he continues. "Here we find Drew at the bottom of a pool which is to represent anxiety, feeling trapped suffocating." Talking about the scene where the DJ duo burns a car down, Rory notes that the scene symbolizes "their success of 'Closer'. Something that changed their lives, my life, and the rest of the team's lives."
He adds, "Much like a fire, we couldn't control what it brought, the love, the hate... we're just trying to be ourselves and do what we love." He concludes his lengthy post by saying that the band scene "was something I wanted to be simple and let their performance and energy do the talking."
