Disney was expected to top the chart with the Ava DuVernay-directed movie, but it fails to conquer the Marvel superhero movie.

AceShowbiz - "A Wrinkle in Time" failed to top North American box office, even with Oprah Winfrey's star power and visionary filmmaker Ava DuVernay behind the lens. The movie debuted at No. 2 on the chart with an estimated $33.3 million against its production and marketing budget of at least $150 million.

The movie, a second big-budget movie from a female director of color, received a strong boost due to the cast that includes Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon. It's also the first movie from the acclaimed filmmaker in four years.

However, the movie failed to meet expectation and opened at the lower end of analysts' projections. With mixed reviews and a B CinemaScore, the movie likely won't gain advantage from word-of-mouth marketing.

As the result of "A Wrinkle in Time" lackluster performance, Disney's other movie "Black Panther" still reigns supreme at the domestic box office. The Ryan Coogler-directed blockbuster starring Chadwick Boseman added an estimated $41.1 million on its fourth weekend, bringing its current domestic total to $562 million. After a sturdy debut in China over the weekend, the first Marvel superhero movie centering on a black character has officially crossed the $1 billion worldwide.

Another newcomer, "The Strangers: Prey at Night", debuted at No. 3 with approximately $10.5 million. "Red Sparrow" dropped two spots to No. 4 with additional $8.1 million, followed by "Game Night" which fell from No. 4 to No. 5 with an estimated $7.9 million.

Another new release making it into the top ten this week is "The Hurricane Heist". The action thriller starring Toby Kebbell landed at No. 8 with approximately $3.1 million. Meanwhile, action comedy "Gringo" starring David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron fell short of debuting in the top ten, placing eleventh with an estimated $2.6 million.
