AceShowbiz - The Grinch is getting into the Olympic spirit. The first teaser footage of Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures' reboot of the holiday classic has been released in conjunction with the start of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, offering the first glimpse of the new take on the holiday grouch.
The TV spot sees the misanthropic green creature watching a figure skater showing his moves during the Winter Olympics. He then imagines himself on the ice rink and the scene changes to show the Grinch in a sharp green outfit pulling off all kinds of elaborate moves set to the tune of Christina Aguilera's pro-LGBTQ anthem "Beautiful".
The Grinch basks in the limelight as the crowd applauds him, but he is suddenly awakened into reality when his dog licks his face.
The teaser doesn't give away the plot details, but it gives more than enough look at how the Grinch will be brought into the big screen with the CGI technology. Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice for the titular character, which was made famous by Jim Carrey in the 2000 live-action adaptation.
The upcoming remake is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss's 1957 children picture book about the famous grump, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food.
Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas.
Kaitlyn Maher will voice Cindy Lou Who, a young Who who thinks the Christmas spirit in Whoville is lost. Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney are tapped to direct the animated reboot based on a screenplay by Michael LeSieur. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri will serve as the producer alongside Janet Healy and Scott Mosier. Audrey Geisel will executive produce with Chris Renaud.
The movie was initially slated to arrive on November 10, 2017, before it's pushed back a year to November 9, 2018.
