Responding to claims that his spy thriller looks similar to the backstory of the Marvel character, director Francis Lawrence says, 'This is not pulled from BW, this is pulled from Red Sparrow.'

AceShowbiz - The trailers for Jennifer Lawrence-starring spy thriller "Red Sparrow" have drawn a lot of comparisons to Marvel's "Black Widow". And now, director Francis Lawrence has responded to the comparisons between his new movie and "Black Widow" that have been circulating around the internet, saying that the similarities are superficial.

In a new interview with Screen Rant, Francis said, "There's people who think it's very similar to the Black Widow story." He explained, "This is not pulled from BW, this is pulled from Red Sparrow, you know, it's just like written by a guy who was in the CIA. It's like, his references are coming from a very very different place from that. But there'll always be that."

"People like to put things in boxes, and I think is a really unique film," continued the helmer, who has worked together with Jennifer on "The Hunger Games" film series. "This is a thriller, it's not action, again it's not gadgety. It's a hard-R. There's violence, it's a bit perverse, it's suspenseful, a lot of intrigue. It's a very different kind of spy film."

Speaking of the ballet similarity, he said, "Most of the movie takes place after she's injured. There's a big sequence up front where we have a big ballet, choreographed piece that we worked quite hard on and Jen did a bunch of training for and we had great dance doubles and all that great stuff. Which is very cool, but no that's almost right away."

Francis then brought up the comparisons with Charlize Theron's recent spy thriller, "Atomic Blonde". He said that he noticed the similarities between the movies as soon as the trailer for "Atomic Blonde" dropped during the production of "Red Sparrow".

He said the comparisons with the David Leitch-directed film were the shared Eastern European focus and, less tangibly, similar hairstyles. Francis is aware of this but feels in every other aspect the movies are totally different. He said that "some people aren't that aware of 'Atomic Blonde' that won't see those comparisons right up front, at least in terms of some of the imagery."

"Red Sparrow", written by Justin Haythe, is due out in the U.S. on March 2. Co-starring Jennifer Lawrence are Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Irons, Ciaran Hinds, Joely Richardson, Thekla Reuten, Sergei Polunin and Sakina Jaffrey.
