Box Office: 'Coco' Repeats Its Victory With $26M

The animated musical fantasy film still tops North American box office in its second weekend with an additional $27.5 million.

AceShowbiz - Disney and Pixar's "Coco" still dominated the North American box office on a quite weekend with no new wide releases from major studios. The Dia de los Muertos-themed animated musical fantasy film remained on top of the box office in its second weekend, earning an additional $27.5 million from 3,987 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

The rest of the top five this weekend were also repeats. Warner Bros.' superhero tentpole "Justice League" stayed at the runner-up spot in with $16.7 million, bringing its 17-day domestic total to $197.3 million and its worldwide total to $567.4 million. The film, which is directed by Zack Snyder with additional work by Joss Whedon and stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher and Henry Cavill, received mixed reviews and a B-plus CinemaScore.

Holding on to the No. 3 spot this weekend was Lionsgate's family film "Wonder". It collected $12.1 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $88 million. The movie, which stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay, was made on a budget of $20 million.

Disney and Marvel's superhero sequel "Thor: Ragnarok", which sees Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder, remained on the No. 4 spot with $9.9 million. It's winding up with a $291.4 million domestic total after 31 days and expected to become the 71st titles to surpass the $300 million mark within the next week.

The fifth place was still owned by Paramount's paternal comedy "Daddy's Home 2". The movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Mel Gibson and John Lithgow earned $7.6 million in its fourth weekend.

According to comScore, overall domestic moviegoing totaled $104 million, up $8 million from the same frame in 2016 and the biggest post-Thanksgiving weekend in five years. "The biggest post-thanksgiving weekend since 2012 proves that there was no need for a wide release newcomer to drive large numbers of moviegoers to the multiplex that is already chock full of appealing titles from both the blockbuster side of the ledger and awards season favorites," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.
