AceShowbiz - Tom Petty is "clinging to life" after he was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home on Sunday, October 1, TMZ reports. The "Free Fallin' " singer was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, but by the time he got there he had no brain activity. He was put on life support.
The site reports that on Monday morning, a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. The family has a "do not resuscitate" order on Tom and a decision was made to pull life support. The 66-year-old rocker is not expected to live through the day, but he's still clinging to life.
CBS News reported earlier today that Tom had died, but Los Angeles Police Department later said they had no information and had no investigative role in the matter. They also said that the report about the singer's death is inaccurate.
"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly provided to some media sources," the department said in a statement posted on Twitter. "However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting."
Tom is best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, but he has also been a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup The Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch. He became famous in 1978 with the success of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' "Breakdown".
The rock star just wrapped his tour last week at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The tour, which he said last year would likely be his "last big one," was launched in support of the group's debut LP's 40th anniversary.
