'Bumblebee' Release Date Is Announced, John Cena Joins Cast

In addition to the release date announcement of the 'Transformers' spin-off starring Hailee Steinfeld, it is reported that the WWE superstar has nabbed a lead role.

AceShowbiz - Paramount Pictures has announced the release date of "Bumblebee". The "Transformers" spin-off starring Hailee Steinfeld will arrive in theaters across the nation next year on December 21, just in time for Christmas.

The movie will be up against some heavy competitors including DC's "Aquaman". There's also an untitled film from Fox and James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment slated to open on that date. An untitled animated Spider-Man movie also debuts the previous week, while "Mary Poppins Returns" will open in theaters five days after "Bumblebee" premieres.

As "Bumblebee" began production today (July 31) in California, a new report has emerged saying that John Cena has officially joined the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the WWE star has nabbed a lead role in the pic which features a young cast including Jorge Lendeborg and Jason Drucker among others.

Travis Knight ("Kubo and the Two Strings") is directing from a script by Christina Hodson ("Shut In"). The synopsis of the film reads, "On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug."
