HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirms that he has asked author Liane Moriarty to come up with a story for season 2.

AceShowbiz - "Big Little Lies" season 2 is looking more and more likely happening. Though there's still no official word on a follow-up installment, HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed to reporters after the HBO panel at the summer TCA press tour that a second season of the miniseries is in early development.
"[Author] Liane [Moriarty] is taking her crack at it and I think that it's interesting," Bloys said, "I don't think [there's been] a time when we've gone to the writer of the novel, the source material, to come up with like, 'Do you see ongoing stories?' I'll be very curious to see what she comes up with that. Normally you go to a TV writer, and say, 'What do you see?' "
Director Jean-Marc Vallee once said he's done with the series. Vallee recently said, "There is no way; there's no reason to make a season 2. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it's finishing in a way where it's for the audience to imagine what can happen."
Asked if the potential season 2 would still go on without the helmer, Bloys responded, "I know he said that. But you know Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman]. First, we have to see the material and if it's worth everybody's time. If it is, then the conversation of directors [will happen]. I understand why Jean-Marc feels [that way]. He did that. He's doing another show for us, all eight episodes. But Nicole and Reese can be very persuasive."
Moriarty, the author of the book on which the series was based, said back in April, "The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens."
Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have expressed interest in reprising their roles for the second season. "We've always said we only want to do it if it can really warrant it," Kidman explained, "which, you know, sort of digging in now we go, 'Gosh, they're great characters and great roles for so many women and maybe for some more women, too.' "
Witherspoon added, "We're talking to Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book, about how could these characters go on, what would happen? We definitely left it open-ended so there's a possibility there."
