Comic-Con: 'Ready Player One' First Footage Introduces Stepen Spielberg's VR Dystopia
Movie

Aside from paying homage to 1980s elements like Freddie Krueger, the 'Back to the Future' DeLorean and the iconic Tom Sawyer from 'Rush', the teaser trailer features the Iron Giant.

AceShowbiz - After giving the first look at "Ready Player One" in the form of photo earlier this month, Steven Spielberg dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming movie while kicking off the Warner Bros. panel at Comic-Con in Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday, July 22. It marked the filmmaker's second time at the convention after "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" in 2011.

The mind-blowing video introduces us to Spielberg's virtual reality dystopia in the movie he adapted from Ernest Cline's YA novel. Cline, who also co-scripted the film, said that he "learned to become a storyteller from this guy ... his films are woven in my DNA," before mentioning that the movie would be a huge breakthrough for showing the masses the power of virtual reality.

Spielberg said, "When I read Ernie's book, it was the amazing flash-forward and flashback to the '80s that I used to work in. The creation of a virtual world took 2 1/2 years of preparation." About the source material's focus on the future, the filmmaker quipped, "I read the book, and said, 'They're going to need a younger director.' "

In the approximately-2-and-a-half-minute teaser trailer, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), the young protagonist who lives in a stacked trailer park in 2044 Columbus, Ohio, can be seen putting on VR goggles and entering a futuristic world, with homages to 1980s elements like Freddie Krueger, the "Back to the Future" DeLorean and the iconic Tom Sawyer from "Rush".

The trailer also features the Iron Giant. "He's a major player in this story," said Spielberg said during the panel, which included stars Sheridan, T.J. Miller, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn as well as co-screenwriter Zak Penn.

"Ready Player One" will hit theaters across the nation next year on March 30.
