Artist of the Week: 21 Savage
Music

The 24-year-old rapper, who spent his teenage life as a petty criminal, has finally released a proper LP following his deal with renowned record label earlier this year.

AceShowbiz - 21 Savage's life has taken an unexpected turn over the last few years. After deciding to turn to hip-hop as a way out of his rough street life, the spitter, whose real name is Shaaya Bin-Abraham Joseph, has shot to fame as a bright newcomer with his music, which represents his dark life.

Following the release of several EPs and mixtapes, including his highly-acclaimed collaborative EP with Metro Boomin, "Savage Mode", 21 Savage unleashed his first full-length studio effort "Issa Album" on July 7. "Issa" is short for "It's a," famously used as a slang after 21 Savage's interview about his dagger tattoo.

Laced with fourteen tracks, "Issa Album" debuted at No. 2 on Billboard 200 chart and sold 77,000 equivalent album units, including 22,000 in traditional album sales. Meanwhile, one of the songs titled "Bank Account" landed at No. 33 on Billboard Hot 100, becoming the rapper's highest-charting single to date.

The new album is 21 Savage's first release under a record label following his deal with Epic Records earlier this year. However, the rapper has claimed that he's still fully in control of his music. He recently shared that his label asked him not to put a track called "FaceTime" on "Issa Album", but he did it anyway.

"Label don't ask me to do nothing. I just did that-just me," he explained. "The label didn't want me to put it on [Issa Album] because they felt like people weren't ready for that side of me. But I still just put it on because I'm in control."
