Kilmer, who portrayed Cruise's on-screen nemesis Iceman in 1986's 'Top Gun', has taken to Instagram to express his excitement at the sequel.

AceShowbiz - Following Tom Cruise's announcement that "Top Gun 2" is happening, a report about its potential director emerges. Variety reports that "Tron Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski is the front-runner to direct the "Top Gun" sequel.

Kosinski previously directed Cruise in "Oblivion" and recently wrapped Miles Teller-starring "Granite Mountain". There hasn't been any official comment from Paramount on whether or not Kosinsky will direct "Top Gun 2".

In related news, Cruise co-star Val Kilmer has taken to his Instagram account to express his excitement at the sequel and say that he is ready to return. Back in 1986, Kilmer portrayed Cruise's on-screen nemesis Iceman in "Top Gun". "Friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today. I'm ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!" writes Kilmer.

During an interview with Australian TV Sunrise on Tuesday, May 23, Cruise confirmed that "Top Gun 2" is "definitely happening." In addition, Cruise said that he might start filming the sequel of the 1986 classic movie next year. "I'm going to start probably in the next year. I know, it's happening. It's definitely happening," said Cruise.

"Top Gun" producer Jerry Bruckheimer actually teased "Top Gun" sequel last year. The sequel has long been a goal for Bruckheimer and Cruise, whose portrayal as Pilot Maverick in the first movie led him to international stardom.

"Top Gun" followed Cruise's Maverick, a student of The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School whose reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. The romantic military action drama film nabbed an awesome $356.8 million against its $15 million budget.
