His family confirmed the sad news on Tuesday, May 23 via Twitter, saying that the actor, who portrayed the iconic secret agent 007 in 1973 until 1985, died after losing battle against cancer.

"It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer," read the statement. Moore's children said the actor would have a private funeral in Monaco in accordance with his wishes.

The "For Your Eyes Only" actor was fondly remembered by many in the film industry, with Russell Crowe leading the tributes on Twitter. "The Mummy" actor simply wrote, "Roger Moore, loved him."

"The Dark Knight" actor Michael Caine said, "I am devastated today at loosing one of my oldest and closest friends ROGER MOORE, my world will never be the same again."

Paul McCartney, who wrote the popular theme song for Moore's 1973 James Bond film "Live and Let Die", also took to the social media to honor the late actor. "He had a heart of gold, a great sense of humor and will be missed by the many people who loved him," so McCartney wrote.

On Instagram, Moore's co-star in "Live and Let Die" Jane Seymour posted a photo of her with the actor and wrote, "I am devastated to learn of Roger Moore's passing." She shared, "The first leading role I ever had as a Bond girl was such a new and frightening world and Roger held my hand and guided me through every process. He taught me about work ethic and humility."

"He was so funny, kind and thoughtful to everyone around him and in that Roger taught me what a movie star really was and should be," she added. "Through his lifelong work with UNICEF he showed me the true meaning of being a humanitarian and giving back. He was my Bond."
