Zack Snyder Leaves 'Justice League' Due to Family Tragedy, Joss Whedon Will Take Over the Project
Movie

Snyder exits 'Justice League', which is currently in post-production, to cope with the death of his daughter and he has handed the project over to Whedon, who helmed Marvel's 'The Avengers'.

AceShowbiz - Director Zack Snyder is stepping away from "Justice League" to cope with the death of his daughter. Snyder's wife Deborah Snyder, who served as producer, is also taking a break from the project. Meanwhile, Marvel's "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon is set to finish the DC movie, which is currently in post-production.

Snyder's daughter Autumn died by suicide last March at the age of 20. Her death wasn't reported in the press, even though the movie was put on a two-week break after the tragic event. Snyder, however, initially wanted to return for its finishing touch.

"In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it," said Snyder in an emotional interview with The Hollywood Reporter at his office on the Warner Bros. lot on Monday, May 22, along with Deborah by his side. "The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I've come to the realization...I've decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I'm having a hard time," he added.

Autumn was Snyder's daughter from his first marriage to Denise Snyder, whom he shares four children with. In addition, Snyder has two kids from his relationship with Kristen Elin and two adopted kids with Deborah. The death of Autumn seemingly brought a new perspective for Snyder, as he said, "I want the movie to be amazing, and I'm a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison. I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie, but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it's just a movie. It's a great movie. But it's just a movie."

As for "Justice League", it was said that Snyder planned to make additional scenes after screening a rough cut of the movie for fellow filmmakers and friends. Whedon, who has been set to look after the rest of the post-production, was brought on board to write them. It was mentioned that there were some scenes which would be filmed in England, for which Snyder wouldn't manage to attend.

"The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set," said Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich. "We're not introducing any new characters. It's the same characters in some new scenes. He's handing the baton to Joss, but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we'll still end up with a great movie," he explained.

"Justice League" is set to hit U.S. theaters on November 17.
