A man named Stephen Cummings claims that 'Titanic' director James Cameron has stolen his story as the inspiration for Jack Dawson, who was played by Leonardo DiCaprio back in 1997.

AceShowbiz - "Titanic" director James Cameron is sued by a man from Florida. The man named Stephen Cummings, who works in yacht industry, claims that Cameron has stolen his story as the inspiration for Jack Dawson, who was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1997 movie.

According to TMZ, the lawsuit mentioned that Cameron "learned about Cummings through word of mouth about events that took place in Brevard County in 1988 and '89." To make it clearer, Cumming said that "the depiction of the Titanic sinking was NOT based on history, but instead on stories he told friends about 2 of his relatives who were aboard the real doomed ship." At that moment, the wife survived, while the husband did not.

Cummings demanded $300 million and 1 percent of royalties in his lawsuit. There hasn't been any comment from Cameron about the matter.

"Titanic" was released in 1997, with DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane starring. The movie followed DiCaprio's Jack Dawson and Winslet's Rose DeWitt Bukater, two people with different social classes who fall in love during Titanic's ill-fated maiden voyage. "Titanic" was dubbed one of the highest-grossing films of all time, nabbing a massive $2.18 billion and was only defeated by Cameron's "Avatar" in 2009.
