Starz Renews 'American Gods' for Season 2

The network has greenlit its Neil Gaiman's best-selling novel TV adaptation for season 2, which is set to premiere in 2018.

AceShowbiz - Freshman series "American Gods" has scored a season 2 renewal on Starz. The renewal comes just two weeks after the series premiered on May 7 to rave reviews. The upcoming season 2 is scheduled to be released in mid-2018.

"Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with 'American Gods', and we're thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods," Starz's programming president Carmi Zlotnik said in a statement.

" 'American Gods' has been a ground-breaking series born out of belief and it’s thrilling to be partnered with Starz to continue this ambitious story," FremantleMedia North America's co-CEO Craig Cegielski added. "Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have ignited a conversation through cinematic magic, presented through a diverse ensemble of actors that continue to keep us engaged and inspired."

"American Gods" is based on Gaiman's 2001 best-selling book of the same name. The trippy series stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, an ex-con who finds himself in a tug-of-war between America's old Gods and new Gods. Ian McShane stars as Mr. Wednesday (Odin), while Orlando Jones stars as Mr. Nancy (Anansi).

The series also stars Yetide Badaki, Emily Browning, Bruce Langley, Pablo Schreiber and Crispin Glover. Gillian Anderson, Kristin Chenoweth, Peter Stormare, Cloris Leachman and Mousa Kraish are also among the cast members.

The first episode of "American Gods", titled "The Bone Orchard", snagged 975,000 viewers and a 0.4 rating among adults aged 18-49. The series continues to go with pretty strong ratings, pulling in over 700,000 viewers when it's combined with the episode 2.
