The former NFL athlete died at 27 after committing suicide in prison as he was serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder of semi-professional football player, Odin Lloyd.

AceShowbiz - Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Mass. The 27-year-old athlete committed suicide by hanging himself using his bed sheet. According to a statement released by Massachusetts Department of Corrections, Hernandez had blocked his cell door by stuffing items inside it. He wasn't on a suicide watch because he showed no signs of wanting to hurt himself. Officers found him during the regular hourly round.

CBS Boston reported further details about his death, stating that Hernandez was found with "John 3:16" written in red marker on his forehead. A bible open to that verse was also found inside his cell. The verse read, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." There was another possibility that he was smoking K2 synthetic marijuana before killing himself.

Prior to his death, Hernandez was serving a life sentence after he was found guilty killing a semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd in 2013. He became the primary suspect after witnesses reported that the two had an argument in a club a few days before the incident. The NFL star also contacted Lloyd a few hours before his body was found in North Attleborough.

After he was charged with first-degree murder of Lloyd, Hernandez was linked to a drive-by shooting that killed two people in 2012. After being arrested for these two cases, he was dropped by his team, New England Patriots. He was acquitted for the 2012 murders only five days ago.

Hernandez's former agent Brian Murphy tweeted about his death, saying, "Absolutely no chance he took his own life. Chico was not a saint, but my family and I loved him and he would never take his own life."
