Law will play the younger version of the iconic wizard, who serves as transfiguration professor at wizarding school Hogwarts in 'Fantastic Beasts 2'.

AceShowbiz - "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2" finds its Albus Dumbledore in Jude Law. Variety reported that Law would star in the "Harry Potter" spin-off as the younger version of the iconic wizard, following in the footsteps of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who portrayed the older version of Dumbledore in "Harry Potter" movies.

Law, therefore, will join Eddie Redmayne and Johnny Depp in the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" sequel. Redmayne will reprise his role as magizoologist Newt Scamander, while Depp will return as evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

In "Fantastic Beasts 2" timeline, Dumbledore isn't a Hogwarts professor yet. Instead, he serves as transfiguration professor at the wizarding school. It is reported that Warner Bros. was considering several big actors for the role, including Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong.

Director David Yates expresses his thought about Law in a statement. "Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I'm looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him," Yates says. "I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life," he adds.

Warner Bros. president Toby Emmerich echoes Yates' statement, as he says, "As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the 'Fantastic Beasts' cast, playing a character so universally adored. Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros family for years and we're excited to embark on this new adventure with him."

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2" is currently in pre-production, with its story reportedly being set in the U.K. and Paris. J.K. Rowling will again write the script and the movie is set to be released sometime in 2018. The first movie follows the adventure of magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1920s America. The film grossed $807.6 million worldwide and nabbed an Oscar for Best Costume Design.

Law will next be seen as Vortigern in "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword". Currently, the 44-year-old actor stars on HBO's "The Young Pope". He will reportedly reprise his role as Dr. Watson in upcoming "Sherlock Holmes 3".
