Blumhouse, the studio behind the movie franchise, is launching its own full-fledged TV production company and setting 'The Purge' as one of its first two announced TV projects.

AceShowbiz - Blumhouse announced on Tuesday, April 4 that it would bring its hugely successful "The Purge" franchise to the small screen. The new series based on the politically tinged movies, which follow American citizens who are allowed to commit crimes without legal consequences for a twelve-hour period once a year, is currently in the development stage and reportedly will air on Syfy and USA.
According to Deadline, Blumhouse, the studio behind "The Purge" movies, has launched an independent television studio with ITV Studios acquiring a 45 per cent stake, making Blumhouse Television a true independent studio. "The Purge" TV series is one of its first two announced projects, along with "Secure and Hold: The Last Days of Roger Ailes", a limited series for Showtime.
Blumhouse head Jason Blum said in a statement, "Over the past few years, we have been working to build Blumhouse Television into an independent studio so we can have the autonomy to work with the best storytellers and give them freedom to create the best dark genre programming."
"We are excited that with the launch of this new studio, we are expanding our partnership with NBCUniversal by growing 'The Purge' franchise into a television series and are grateful for their incredible support of Blumhouse overall," Blum added.
ITV Managing Director Julian Bellamy added, "Jason and his team have an unrivaled reputation in the suspense and thriller genres, delivering hit after hit at the US and international box office. They have very quickly established an enviable track record by applying these skills to television and we are delighted to come on board for the next stage of the company's exciting development. This partnership is another step forward in ITV Studios building a global scripted business of scale."
James DeMonaco, the writer and director of all three "Purge" movies (2013's "The Purge", 2014's "The Purge: Anarchy" and 2016's "The Purge: Election Year"), will oversee the series. The series reportedly "will be an entirely new chapter in America's 12 hours of annual lawlessness." Further detail of the new TV series is currently unknown.
