Jimmy Kimmel Breaks Down Oscar Mix-Up: How Denzel Washington Helped Save the Day
TV

In his words, Kimmel describes what happened when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong Best Picture winner as 'Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus.'

AceShowbiz - After last night's Academy Awards which ended with a major flub, Jimmy Kimmel took to his show on Monday night, February 27 to explain what really happened. During his monologue, the comedian said he was watching from the audience when he knew something was off.

"See what Warren did there?" Kimmel said of the moment Warren Beatty hesitated before handing the envelope to Faye Dunaway to read. "He was confused, so he let her read the winner. In other words, Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus," he enthused. "I have to be honest ... it's one of the slickest moves I've ever seen."

Kimmel revealed the plan was to end the show with him sitting next to Matt Damon. But as the host, he realized that he had to do something, so he walked onto the stage. "The audience is confused," Kimmel said. "The people standing around me are confused. I assume everyone at home is confused, and I'm probably supposed to do something because no one's doing anything."

After "La La Land" producer Jordan Horowitz called the "Moonlight" gang to the stage, Kimmel and Beatty tried to explain to the audience about the mix-up when the comedian noticed Denzel Washington yelled, "Barry." At that moment Kimmel realized he forgot "Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins was standing behind him and Washington signaled to Kimmel to get out of the way and let Jenkins deliver his speech.

"Thank god Denzel was there to make sense," Kimmel said.

Kimmel admitted he got a lot of questions after he walked off stage. People asked him if he pulled a prank. He said he didn't and if he had done such a prank, "there would've been a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon inside."

After playing detective backstage, Kimmel found out how the mix-up happened. "For whatever reason, they have two of each envelope," the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" host said. "There's a regular envelope and a backup envelope, just to make it more confusing. The accountants gave Warren the wrong card, and they apologized for it today. So it wasn't Warren Beatty's fault. And Faye Dunaway, she made quite a getaway. She read the wrong name and split. She got the hell out of there."

The Oscar mix-up reminds everyone to the time Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner at 2015 Miss Universe. Responding to the latest TV snafu, Harvey joked on his morning radio show that his burden was lifted. "I'd like to say in the words of Martin Luther King: 'Free at last, free at last. Thank God almighty, I'm free at last,' " he said.
