The Academy Award winner is reportedly on board for James Cameron's upcoming manga adaptation, joining Christoph Waltz and Rosa Salazar.

AceShowbiz - "Alita: Battle Angel" adds another big star to its cast lineup. Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly joins the cast of the James Cameron-produced Japanese manga-adapted movie.

The "Hulk" actress will play a villainous role, The Hollywood Reporter reports. However, details about her character are still kept under wraps. Connelly is familiar with this genre, as she once starred in action film "Labyrinth" and left an impression in 1991's "The Rocketeer". Connelly's latest movie project is "American Pastoral", released last October, in which she stars opposite Ewan McGregor. She is currently filming Lionsgate's "Granite Mountain" which is slated for a September release.

Set in the 26th century, the movie revolves around a female cyborg (Rosa Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist (Christoph Waltz). The woman becomes a bounty hunter to track down criminals, as she has no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

James Cameron began developing the movie years ago as an initial follow-up to "Titanic", after he acquired the rights in 1999. However, the project was delayed when he decided to put "Avatar" as his priority instead. In 2015, he announced that Robert Rodriguez ("Grindhouse") would take over the directorial duty, while he is still on board as producer along with his "Avatar" and "Titanic" colleague, Jon Landau.

Already tapped for this movie are Jackie Earle Haley, Eiza Gonzalez, Lana Condor, Mahershala Ali and Ed Skrein. The movie is currently filming in Texas for a July 20, 2018 release.
