The movie from Sony Pictures Animation marks Roberts' first return to animated film since 2006's 'The Ant Bully' and 'Charlotte's Web'.

AceShowbiz - The iconic Julia Roberts has joined the cast of "Smurfs: The Lost Village". She will voice a wise new character named Smurfwillow. The movie's latest image offers a first look at Roberts' character.

"Smurfs: The Lost Village" marks Roberts' first return to animated film since 2006's "The Ant Bully" and "Charlotte's Web". She expresses her excitement of becoming a part of the animation originated from Belgian comic franchise. "Smurfs are such a fun part of our animated culture," says Roberts to PEOPLE. "They were popular when I was a child and they were popular when my kids were little. It's fun to be part of such a sweet group that continues to entertain young people."

Director Kelly Asbury says that he is thrilled with Roberts' performance. "I am thrilled with Julia Roberts' performance in 'Smurfs: The Lost Village'," he says. "Julia brings to the role a sense of honesty and depth, thus helping to create truth to the reality of the entire story. It was a blast working with Julia-whose real-life generous, good-natured spirit translates beautifully in giving voice to this new, mysterious character."

"Smurfs: The Lost Village" follows the adventure of Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty. With the help of a mysterious map, they're racing through a Forbidden Forest with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village. Smurfette and Co. have to find it before evil Gargamel does.

Also starring alongside Julia Roberts in the movie are Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Joe Manganiello as Hefty, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy and Danny Pudi as Brainy. Michelle Rodriguez, Ellie Kemper and Ariel Winter have also joined the cast. The movie from Sony Pictures Animation is set to hit U.S. theaters on April 7.
