AceShowbiz - Have you read the first part of AceShowbiz's guide to Must-Watch New TV Series in Midseason 2017? If you have and didn't find them catching your interest, don't worry because there are still a lot of upcoming shows that offer a wide range of selections for audiences. After highlighting the much talked-about adaptations, we'll move to darker and grittier series, sometimes with moody tone.

Take "The Young Pope" for an example. This potential critics' darling captures the side of complicated life of a newly appointed pope which you have never seen before. "Prison Break" revival that is identical with crimes and supernatural drama series "Midnight, Texas" are among other options for those who feel the need to be challenged with twists, thrills and serious stories.

MIDNIGHT, TEXAS

Premiere date: TBA on NBC

"True Blood" fans should not miss this one! Based on the book series of the same name by Charlaine Harris, the same man who wrote the "True Blood" novels, "Midnight, Texas" has witches, angels, psychics and werewolves on it, but without adult contents like the HBO series. The supernatural drama centers on a wayfaring psychic, Manfred Bernardo (Francois Arnaud), who moves away to the small town of Midnight, a safe haven for those who are different. But when the murder of one of their own brings outside pressures to the town, the residents bond and band together to deal with suspicious authorities and other unwanted attention given to them.

PRISON BREAK

Premiere date: Spring on FOX

Revival has been the latest trend on television in the past few years and "Prison Break" is another to receive such treatment. Of course, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are back as the on-screen siblings, though Miller's Michael Scofield was presumed dead at the end of the original series. More familiar faces, like Sarah Wayne Callies' Sara Tancredi and Robert Knepper's villainous T-Bag, will get you even more nostalgic, but they're not back just because they could. Fox Television Group co-chair Dana Walden said that the revival would provide "a logical and believable explanation to why the characters are alive and still moving around the world." The so-called sequel indeed will take our beloved characters outside the U.S., as Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) tries to break his brother out of a Yemen prison.

TABOO

Premiere date: January 10 on FX

It can't be denied that Tom Hardy is a big draw on miniseries "Taboo". Having shown his versatility by starring in mind-bending sci-fi thriller "Inception", comic book adaptation "The Dark Knight Rises" as well as biographical thriller "The Revenant", the Academy Award-nominated actor brings his talent to the small screen through the British drama, which he co-created with his father Chips as well as Steven Knight. As for just how much Tom is invested into the storyline, he's been willing to get completely naked to depict life of rogue adventurer James Delaney, who returns home from Africa to seek revenge after his father's death. Oona Chaplin, David Hayman, Michael Kelly and Jonathan Pryce round out the solid main cast.

TIME AFTER TIME

Premiere date: TBA on ABC

"Time After Time" is a take on the notorious criminal Jack the Ripper with a fantasy twist. Based on the book of the same name by Karl Alexander that was adapted into a feature film with the same name in 1979, it follows famed science fiction writer H.G. Wells (Freddie Stroma), who is transported to modern day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper (Joshua Bowman). Once Wells arrives in New York, he finds a world he never thought possible and a young woman who captivates him. It's created by Kevin Williamson who wrote the scripts for some "Scream" movies and created such TV shows as "The Vampire Diaries", "The Following" and "Stalker", so you can imagine how the show won't hold back in depicting the gruesome murders.

THE YOUNG POPE

Premiere date: January 15 on HBO

It takes more than a good idea to lure Jude Law to transition from big screen to small screen. "The Young Pope", indeed, sounds more than promising with Paolo Sorrentino, the mastermind behind Oscar-winning movie "The Great Beauty", serving as director. The limited series centers on Pope Pius XIII (Law) at the beginning of his Pontificate. An ultra-conservative Pope, he shocks the Vatican and the world with his bold moves and stance on various issues, which may cost him the loyalty of those closest to him. As he navigates the political hallways of Vatican City, we are taken into his complex psychological state as a child abandoned by his parents and a pope who is wrestling with his belief in God. At the hands of Sorrentino, his eccentric behaviors, such as meditating underwater, are turned into stunning visuals.
