'My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma,' the 'Girls' creator says as she apologizes for saying on her recent podcast that she wished she had an abortion

AceShowbiz - Lena Dunham landed herself in trouble for speaking out about abortion on her "Women of the Hour" podcast. Many fans were left outraged after the "Girls" creator/star said that she'd never had an abortion, but wished that she had.

In the podcast, Dunham recalled discussing abortion during a visit to a Texas Planned Parenthood years ago. At one point, she said she would want to undergo the procedure in order to change "stigma around abortion."

Many fans then took to social media to express their anger. "FYI an abortion is not something you 'get to have.' It's an awful experience one SHOULDN'T wish for like a gift from Santa," one Twitter user wrote. "There's a difference between fighting for reproductive rights and wishing you'd had an abortion, @lenadunham. If only you understood that," another said.

Responding to the backlash, Dunham issued an apology via Instagram on Tuesday, December 20. Captioning a picture of the word "Choice" on a blackboard, she began her lengthy statement, "My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don't choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means. I'm so proud of the medley of voices in the episode."

"I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of 'delusional girl' persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate," she continued.

"I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy. My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma," she went on writing and concluding the message by hinting that she'd make "sizable donation to abortion funds."
