Exec producer Marc Guggenheim says that they didn't expect the show would run beyond five seasons and promise to make the season five finale pretty awesome.

AceShowbiz - "Arrow" was expected to end just as how the series started with an image of Oliver (Stephen Amell) spying the fishing boat that would rescue him from Lian Yu. However, showrunner Marc Guggenheim reveals that the scene will now end up being in the season 5 finale.

"Spoiler alert. That's going to end up being the season 5 finale," he tells TVLine. "It was really just a hope at that point [in 2012] that the show would run five years. We always thought that we would intercut the final moment of the series with the first moment of the series, that it would form one big Moebius strip," he explains the change of plan.

Guggenheim admits, "There's still a part of me that wishes we could do that." He adds though, "But I wouldn't want to artificially extend the flashbacks [beyond five seasons], and I also wouldn't want to artificially cut the show short. It would've been a beautifully elegant thing and Five Years Ago Me would've loved it. But things change and I do think it'll make the season 5 finale pretty awesome."

"Look, we have some incredibly clear plans for what we want to do in season 5 finale," he says. "At the same time, we always leave ourselves room to be like, '...and throw this cliffhanger in, throw that twist in.' Usually the craziest ideas on this show tend to be the ones that the ideas sort of linger and we never really quite set on them. Like, 'Oh, maybe we'll kill off Tommy?' We don't fully commit until we're pretty much breaking the episode."

Elsewhere, Stephen Amell took to Facebook for a Q&A and to urge fans to watch the upcoming episode. "Watch next week's episode and for god's sake, do not miss the last scene," he said.

The official description for the midseason finale reads, "Prometheus makes a deadly move against Oliver and the team. After Prometheus attacks Curtis (Echo Kellum), Oliver realizes Prometheus knows all of Team Arrow's secret identities and is planning to come for them one by one. Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and detective Malone (guest star Tyler Ritter) discover a clue that links Prometheus to Oliver's past."

"Arrow" season 5 finale, which is titled "What We Leave Behind", will air on Wednesday, December 7 at 8 P.M. ET on The CW.
