The 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' star is reportedly joining the upcoming CBS All Access series as Starfleet captain.

AceShowbiz - Michelle Yeoh ("Tomorrow Never Dies", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") will join CBS All Access' "Star Trek: Discovery". The casting news has been confirmed by the series' consulting producer, Nicholas Meyer. Though her role is not revealed yet, Yeoh is reportedly going to take the lead role, who is a female Lieutenant Commander.

However, instead of being a Starfleet Captain, Yeoh will reportedly be the leader of another ship. According to Deadline, the actress has been cast as Han Bo and her ship is the Shenzhou. The Yeoh-run spacecraft is set to play a big role in the first season of the series.

Plot and character details about "Star Trek: Discovery" are not available yet, but it is known that the series will take place about 10 years before the events of the original series. The lead character will be a young woman, likely non-white, serving as a lieutenant commander aboard the Federation starship Discovery, known to her crew as "number one."

This raises the speculation that the character is second in command on the ship, as "number one" often refers to two previous Trek first officers, Majel Barrett's character on the original "Star Trek" pilot "The Cage" and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) on "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

"Star Trek: Discovery" is going to be the first "Star Trek" series where the main character is not the commanding officer. Series co-creator and producer Bryan Fuller has frequently emphasized the show's commitment to diversity, confirming at TCA last summer that there would be at least one gay character. He also has said there will be both familiar and new alien races.

Michelle Yeoh has recently reprised her role of Yu Shu Lien in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny". She also played a recurring role as Lotus in the second season of Netflix's original series "Marco Polo".

"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere January 2017 on CBS, before moving to CBS All Access.
