AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr. took the stage of the 2016 American Music Awards to present Sting with the Award of Merit. The 65-year-old English singer-songwriter was the first musician to receive the special honor since 2008, when the title was given to Annie Lennox.

Robert presented the award to Sting with a clip of him singing. "I want that clip played before I walk onstage anywhere from now until forever," the "Iron Man" actor told the audience, "He's one of the most talented and giving human beings on the face of the earth. He's also a teacher much as he started out .... Whether it's our oceans, the rainforest, Tibet or Paris, anyone who knows him can feel how deeply he cares. His singular voice remains a call to action in these deeply uncertain times."

The AMAs played a clip with a voiceover about Sting's career before the singer took the stage to perform a medley of his hits, like "I Can't Stop Thinking About You", "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take".

During his acceptance speech, Sting said, "I'm deeply moved by this extravagant gesture and their support to me as a musical migrant to acknowledge the very real debt I already owed to American Music...America's greatest and most influential export, rock and roll. A giant jam session where doors are open to all comers and the spirit of welcome and inclusion [that's] made this the greatest country in the world."
