His replacements have been announced as Fuller will continue to serve as executive producer on the CBS All Access series.

AceShowbiz - "Star Trek: Discovery" is losing its showrunner Bryan Fuller. The 47-year-old screenwriter and TV producer, who co-created the CBS All Access series with Alex Kurtzman, has stepped down from the post, prior to the show premiere in early 2017.

Executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts are now tapped as new showrunners. Fuller has endorsed the duo via a statement on Twitter, "Riker spent 7 years of TNG unready for Captaincy, @GretchenJBerg @AaronHarberts are ready. Thrilled to see them in command of the Bridge."

CBS also released a statement on Fuller's exit, "We are extremely happy with the creative direction of 'Star Trek: Discovery' and the strong foundation that Bryan Fuller has helped us create for the series. Due to Bryan's other projects, he is no longer able to oversee the day-to-day of 'Star Trek', but he remains an executive producer and will continue to map out the story arc for the entire season."

"Alex Kurtzman, co-creator and executive producer, along with Fuller's producing partners and longtime collaborators, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, will also continue to oversee the show with the existing writing and producing team," the statement continued, "Bryan is a brilliant creative talent and passionate 'Star Trek' fan, who has helped us chart an exciting course for the series. We are all committed to seeing this vision through and look forward to premiering 'Star Trek: Discovery' this coming May 2017."

According to Variety, Fuller's commitments to other shows, Starz's upcoming series "American Gods" and "Amazing Stories" reboot for NBC, have caused a tension between the "Hannibal" creator and CBS. The show's budget, which is approaching $9 million per episode, is reportedly a source of stress as well.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is scheduled to premiere January 2017 on CBS, before moving to CBS All Access.
