Director Matt Reeves reveals that Harrelson's Colonel is one of the most important elements transforming the movie into a 'dark revenge tale,' saying that 'he is extreme.'

AceShowbiz - Following the reveal of "War for the Planet of the Apes" first footage and plot details, a new report has emerged unveiling details about Woody Harrelson's Colonel in the Matt Reeves-directed movie. While at NYCC, the helmer told ComicBook.com that the villainous character is one of the most important elements transforming the movie into a "dark revenge tale."
"Woody is extraordinary," Reeves said. "He just dove in in this amazing way. His character, we don't think of any of the antagonists as villains, per say, because you have to understand where they're coming from in a justified way. The humans are in a desperate place and he is extreme and you find out why he's so extreme as the story goes on so you have empathy for him, too. He's pretty dark."
Producer Dylan Clark added that the ruthless Colonel came "from a place of torment." Clark went on to reveal that it's something Caesar (Andy Serkis) as well as fans would come to realize in a fashion which almost made the movie's bad guy relatable. "They're generally pitted together in this movie," the producer said.
Also starring Judy Greer, Steve Zahn and Amiah Miller, "War for the Planet of the Apes" is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on July 14, 2017. Written by Mark Bomback, the movie follows Caesar and his apes who are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel.
After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins this own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
