The 'Young, Wild and Free' hitmaker defended the younger generation during his acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards.

AceShowbiz - Snoop Dogg saluted young rappers while receiving the "I Am Hip Hop" Award at the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday night, October 4. The Doggfather also offered words of advice for the younger generation of hip hop.

"This is real sentimental right now for me to see my peers and all of my people in hip-hop give me the respect that I didn't strive for," Snoop told the crowd, "I just strived to make music and make people feel good and get off my expression."

The "Young, Wild & Free" hitmaker added, "I also want to say to all the young rappers that's in the game right now, a lot of people don't understand y'all and y'all misunderstood. They didn't understand me in the beginning either so you gotta keep pushing, stay who you are, be original, be diverse. As a young MC, as a young artist, you gotta always be who you are because at the end of the day, you gotta live with who you are."

The award was presented by Kendrick Lamar, who expressed his admiration for his mentor at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. "Through his examples, we discovered our own transformative abilities to make a mark on our art," Kendrick said, "No other rappers can simultaneously give you records like 'Murder Was the Case', and at the same time, make every beautiful woman, drop it like it's hot. Snoop Dogg was the guy and he continue to be."

Kendrick also praised Snoop for "making accounting sound dope," before leading the crowd into a verse of "Nuthin But a 'G' Thang". Following a montage of testimonials from Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Charlie Wilson and YG, the "Bad Blood" rapper told the veteran singer, "I wouldn't be on this stage without you, man."
