AceShowbiz - Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to join the cast of James Cameron's "Alita: Battle Angel". According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 55-year-old actor will likely take a villainous role as a monstrous cyborg, which will require a lot of CG and green-screen, in the 20th Century Fox adaptation of the popular manga series by Yukito Kishiro.

Robert Rodriguez is on board to direct the adaptation which already has Rosa Salazar playing the title character. Cameron will produce the film with his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau and co-write the script with "Terminator Genisys" and "Shutter Island" scribe Laeta Kalogridis. The production is expected to begin in October in Austin for a July 20, 2018 release in U.S. theaters.

"Alita: Battle Angel" follows the titular female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the rebuilt Alita becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

Haley is well known for his role as Odin Quincannon on AMC's "Preacher" and recently wrapped up filming on Sony's adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" in which he stars alongside Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. He can next be seen in the much-talked-about period drama "The Birth of a Nation" starring Nate Parker in lead role.
