AceShowbiz - Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" has cast former "Doctor Who" regular Karen Gillan in a major role. Deadline has reported that the 28-year-old actress will play Martha. She joins an A-list cast which includes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Nick Jonas in the continuation of the 1995 original pic.
The new "Jumanji" film will be directed by Jake Kasdan, who directed "Bad Teacher", from a script provided by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers pen the original draft based on Chris Van Allsburg's Caldecott Medal-winning adventure book.
Matt Tolmach and William Teitler serve as producers. Kasdan also executive produces the upcoming film along with Van Allsburg, Johnson, David Householter, Ted Field, Mike Weber and Dany Garcia. Principal photography is set to begin next month in Honolulu for a July 28, 2017 U.S. release.
Gillan recently wrapped the filming on indie film "All Creatures Here Below". The 28-year-old actress will reprise her role as Nebula in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and can next be seen opposite Ethan Hawke and John Travolta in "In a Valley of Violence" which is set for an October 21 release this year.
On Tuesday, August 30, The Rock posted on Instagram a picture featuring Gillan to welcome his new co-star to the cast of the new "Jumanji" film. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to announce a girl who's playing the most important role in our movie - the talented, beautiful and down for a Scottish fight at any time, Ms @KarenGillanOfficial," the former wrestler wrote.
