Black Female Teen Iron Man Will Be Called Ironheart

Of choosing the superhero name for Riri Williams, creator Brian Michael Bendis said that 'Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,' while 'Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare.'

AceShowbiz - Marvel announced back in July that a black female teenager named Riri Williams would take over Iron Man suit from Tony Stark in the upcoming "Invincible Iron Man" comic book series. Creator and writer Brian Michael Bendis has just revealed Riri will be going by the name of Ironheart instead of Iron Man or Iron Woman.

Speaking to WIRED about choosing the superhero name, the writer said that "Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some." He continued, "Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole."

Bendis went on to explain that Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. He continued that Riri, a science genius who enrolls in MIT at the age of fifteen, "puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you'll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe's suggestion was."

Riri will be one of two characters who replace Tony Stark as part of "Marvel NOW!" superhero line relaunch in early October. Meanwhile, the other character named Victor Von Doom, formerly known as villain Doctor Doom, will headline new comic book series titled "Infamous Iron Man". No additional detail is known whether he will call himself Iron Man or not.

Written by Bendis with art drawn by Stefano Caselli, "Invincible Iron Man" launches this year in November.
