The former 'Terra Nova' star will play a character 'whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s.'

AceShowbiz - "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has a new boss and he's from prehistoric era. Jason O'Mara, who starred on FOX's short-lived sci-fi series "Terra Nova", has been cast as the new director of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.

The Irish actor will play a character "whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s" in season 4 of the ABC series. Other details about the character, including in how many episodes he will appear, are not announced yet.

"Bringing Jason into the mix as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency," says Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb. "Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent."

O'Mara joins other new additions to the show's cast, including Gabriel Luna who will play Robbie Reyes a.k.a. Ghost Rider and Lilli Birdsell who will portray Lucy, a beautiful woman with a very violent streak.

O'Mara was a series regular on Steven Spielberg-executive produced series "Terra Nova", which was canceled after just one season on FOX because it was one of the season's most expensive series to produce, despite averaging 10.08 million viewers. The show revolves around an ordinary family embarking on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth, fleeing the dystopian overpopulated and hyperpolluted present of the mid-22nd century.

He also appeared on "Complications", "The Good Wife", "Sons of Liberty" and "Life on Mars".

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns with the fourth season Tuesday, September 20 at 10/9c on ABC.
