The HBO show based on George R.R. Martin's book may be followed with a spin-off after taking a bow with season 8.

AceShowbiz - "Game of Thrones" is officially coming to an end. Speaking to the press at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, HBO's new programming president Casey Bloys confirms that the hit series based on George R.R. Martin's novel is going to take a bow with season 8.

"Yes, they [the showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," he says. "If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."

Rumors about the finale have been floated on the internet since the show was announced to return with a shortened 7th season. Instead of the traditional 10 episodes, the show will have only seven episodes for the upcoming season next year.

It's also rumored that the last season will have even less episodes, a merely 6. "The exact number for season seven is locked at seven [episodes], the eighth season is not sure yet," Bloys clarifies. "They know we'll take as many as they want to give us."

When asked if there's any plan for a spin-off, he confirms it's possible. "We've talked about it," he opens up. "It's something I'm not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I'm not sure that [Benioff and Weiss] could really wrap their heads around it when they're just about to start production [on season 7]. It's a pretty intense production, they're about to start production soon. I'm open to it. The guys weren't opposed to it, but there's no concrete plans for it at this point."
