Words are, Lionstage is planning to wrap up the 'Divergent Series' with a TV movie and a spin-off series, following the disappointing box office result of 'Allegiant'.

AceShowbiz - Final "Divergent" movie "Ascendant" may ditch theaters for the small screen. Instead of having "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" open in theaters next year, Lionsgate is reportedly planning to wrap up the "Divergent Series" with a TV movie and a spin-off series.

The final film, "Ascendant", was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on June 9, 2017 with shooting planned to start this summer in Atlanta. But the studio reportedly has had a change of heart after "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" became a big box office disappointment, earning just $66.2 million domestically.

According to Variety, Lionstage's television group will handle the production. The site reports, "The idea is to finalize the storylines involving the current cast and to introduce a new cast, who would then continue the series on either a traditional or streaming network."

It's unclear if the lead stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller would return for the "Ascendant" TV movie. Woodley has reportedly been approached to join the TV version, but no deals have been made at this point. It's also unknown if Lee Toland Krieger, who had been tapped to direct the "Ascendant" movie, will still be on board the TV movie.

A rep of one of the co-stars tells The Hollywood Reporter, "They haven't come to us to discuss deals, but if they think they can skimp on actors' options, they can think again." Sources add that the studio has yet to pitch the project to networks.

The "Divergent" movie series is based on Veronica Roth's best-selling novels. While the first two movies, "Divergent" (2014) and "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" (2015), were box office hits, they never lived up to expectations as the next big YA franchise, following the "Twilight Saga" movies and "The Hunger Games" film series.
