Diddy surprises Lil' Kim as he takes the stage to honor his 'No Time' collaborator, and Common addresses Black Lives Matter movement during his speech to pay tribute to Queen Latifah.

AceShowbiz - "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" returned after a six-year hiatus on Monday, July 11. This year's edition was dedicated to the women of hip hop, including Lil' Kim, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa. At the event that aired live from New York's David Geffen Hall at the Lincoln Center, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs surprised Lil' Kim with his appearance.

"I flew in here tonight to honor my sister, Lil' Kim," he said. "The way you walk, the way you talk. You always pushed the envelope. There's only one Queen Bee." He went on gushing about the female emcee, "As soon as I heard her rhyme. It was something I had never seen or hear before. I knew she was going to be a superstar."

Lil' Kim responded, "He told me that he had something to do and wasn't going to be able to make it!"

Common was on hand to honor Queen Latifah. During his speech, he addressed the Black Lives Matter movement and the recent tragedy in Louisiana, Minnesota and Dallas. "I also want to take this moment to honor all the sisters who have been on the front lines in our ongoing movement for justice. I'm talking about Fannie Lou Hamer, Diane Nash, Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Shirley Chisholm, I'm talking about the Black Lives Matter founders," he said while paying tribute to Latifah.

He added, "And I'm also talking about every day women. Women like Diamond Reynolds, who filmed the police killing [Philando Castile]. Who tried to calmly deescalate the deadly situation and hours later, was at her governor's mansion, demanding justice."

Latifah herself pointed out in her speech that "racism is still alive and kicking." She said, "Listen we all know the world, that our world, is really tense right now... I'm hoping that we can somehow manage to channel all of these emotions that we have in a positive way." She continued, "If I go outside and try to hail a cab and he passes me for the white woman standing right there, that racism is still alive and kicking. And we have to change that. And I'm not blaming the white lady, she needed a cab too."

Michelle Obama also made a surprise appearance in a video, giving a "huge shout out" to Missy Elliott and Latifah. Eve performed "Shoop" in honor of Salt-N-Pepa, while Nelly Furtado led a medley of Missy Elliot's songs.
