The awards show also features Erykah Badu, The Roots, Tori Kelly and Janelle Monae among others performing Prince's songs in honor of the late superstar.

AceShowbiz - Beyonce Knowles set the bar high when she made a surprise appearance at the beginning of the 2016 BET Awards. The singer kicked off the event with a bang as she brought her "Formation" tour to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles Sunday, June 26.

Bey excited the crowd as she performed "Freedom" from her latest album "Lemonade" on the red-lit stage. Along with a bunch of dancers, she sang and danced in a giant pool of water before Kendrick Lamar popped out on the stage to deliver his verse.

Desiigner and Bryson Tiller were other acts highlighting the annual awards show, which this year was co-hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson. The former played a super energetic performance of his massive hit "Panda". He rapped his lines while jumping around onstage and walking in the middle of the crowd.

At one point, he appeared next to Fabolous and seemed to surprise him. Addressing the funny moment, Fabolous said on Twitter that he was caught off guard by Desiigner. "He was on stage, I looked down at my phone for minute then I looked up & he was by me," he explained.

Tiller, meanwhile, treated everyone to his big hits "Exchange" and "Don't". The 23-year-old Louisvile, Kentucky native performed the tunes in front of an ambulance while some famous faces in the audience, including Ray J and "Black-ish" actress Marsai Martin, sang along.

The 2016 BET Awards also offered an awesome tribute to Prince, who passed away back in April. A bunch of musicians performed the Purple One's songs throughout the night, with Erykah Badu being the first. She did "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" before Bilal and The Roots teamed up for "The Beautiful Ones". Tori Kelly joined forces with Stevie Wonder later that night for "Take Me With You". Jennifer Hudson followed it up with "Purple Rain".

Other names enlisted for the tribute were Janelle Monae, who did "Pop Life" and "I Would Die 4 You" among others, and Prince's ex Sheila E. who closed out the festivity with a medley of his singles including "Earthquake", "Erotic City", "Let's Work", "U Got the Look", "America the Beautiful" and "Baby I'm a Star". She also played her 1984 song "The Glamorous Life" which was written by Prince. Meanwhile, D'Angelo who was also planned to be part of the tribute was nowhere to be seen.
