In an interview with American Way magazine, the 'Neon Lights' singer also talked about her bipolar disorder and said that there was a time when she didn't think she would make it to her 21st birthday.

AceShowbiz - Demi Lovato opened up about her struggle with drugs and alcohol addictions as well as her bipolar disorder and eating disorder. In an interview for the July edition of American Way magazine, the "Heart Attack" singer also talked about how she used to self-medicate with alcohol, cocaine and OxyContin.

Lovato recalled a moment when she didn't think she would make it to her 21st birthday. "I lived fast and I was going to die young," Lovato said. "I didn't think I would make it to 21."

The 23-year-old songstress checked into rehab for three months in 2011 and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She was afraid that she would be over exposed by the media. "So now I'm in rehab," Lovato told the magazine, "And I thought, 'Oh great, now the world thinks I'm just another stereotype.' I thought, 'I'm not in treatment for a drug and alcohol problem. But once I started eating again, the other issues got worse. It was like whack-a-mole.' " Though it's been quite a long time since her visit to rehab, Lovato said that she continued to attend AA meetings to stay on track.

She also opened up about her eating disorder, which began when she was just a toddler. Her mother, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, and her grandmother had both struggled with bulimia. "Even though I was 2 or 3 years old. Being around somebody who was 80 pounds and had an active eating disorder...it's hard not to grow up like that," Lovato said.

Lovato started to compete in child beauty pageants when she was seven years old until she was 12. She then talked about her insecurity when she was onstage and judged for her beauty. "When I was gaining weight because I was becoming a woman, I would look at those images [on her bedroom wall] and say to myself, 'Wait, this is not what I look like. I'm getting fat on the hips and on my butt.' "

However, the singer tried to raise awareness for body acceptance recently and she managed to inspire her fans to overcome their struggles. "When I have meet-and-greets, I can't tell you the amount of times that girls will show me their arms covered in scars or cuts," Lovato shared. "They'll tell me, 'You helped me get through this. Because of you, I stopped self-harming,' or 'I got sober.' Hearing those things gave my life new meaning."
