Movie

An elite variant of stormtroopers storm the beach in the latest photos of the stand-alone 'Star Wars' movie, while Kathleen Kennedy explains that Mon Mothma has a 'significantly larger' role.

AceShowbiz - Six new photos of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" have been released. The images are released via EW, giving a closer look at some characters, including an elite variant of the Galactic Empire's stormtroopers and Chirrut Imwe.

The first photo features the black-suited Death Trooper engulfed by flames. The blind warrior-monk Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) is shown in the next photo with his new kind of weapon on his back. Another shot shows Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in a beach battle alongside some fellow Rebel soldiers.

In another photo, Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) is seen taking up a position to fight in front of a crashed X-Wing. The other new photos include an image of Cassian and Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) together, and a behind-the-scenes shot showing how the beach battle was filmed. The latter shows Baze, Chirrut and some fellow Rebel fighters storming the beach.

Along with the release of the said photos, EW also gives an interesting tidbit about Mon Mothma's role in the movie. The chief of Lucasfilm, Katherine Kennedy, tells the site that the character got a "significantly larger" role than in "Return of the Jedi" in which she was played by Caroline Blakiston.

"We actually see quite a bit of her," Kennedy says. "The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do."

In "Rogue One", Mon Mothma is portrayed by Genevieve O'Reilly. She initially portrayed young Mothma in "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith", but her appearance was deleted from the scene.

The film centers on Jyn, a Rebellion soldier and outlaw, who is about to experience her biggest challenge when Mon Mothma gives her a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. With the aid of the Rebels, a master swordsman and non-allied forces, Jyn will be in for something bigger than she thinks.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is set for a December 16 release in the U.S.
