Sony picks first-time director Bob Persichetti to helm the untitled animated Spidey movie which is due for 2018 release.

AceShowbiz - While kicking off production for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" which is a joint venture with Marvel, Sony is moving forward with its own Spidey project. The studio has found a director for a movie that will introduces an animated version of the webslinger.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("The Lego Movie") were originally courted to serve behind the lens for the untitled animated Spider-Man movie, but they were eventually tapped to helm Han Solo movie. Now Bob Persichetti is booked for the job.

Unlike the "Homecoming" which stars Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker, this cartoon one "will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe." The film is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on December 21, 2018.

Lord and Miller will still be involved as producers alongside Avi Arad and Amy Pascal who co-produces the live-action one with Marvel's Kevin Feige. Lord also pens the screenplay.

This movie will mark Persichetti's feature directorial debut, but he is no stranger to animated films. He worked in Disney's animation department, working on "Hercules", "Mulan" and "Tarzan". He was also involved in "Shrek 2" and "Puss in Boots".
