Fans were left confused after the third season finale ended with 'The End' without prior announcement that season 3 would be the last for the show.

AceShowbiz - "Penny Dreadful" has ended after three seasons. Series creator John Logan confirmed it in a special video message to fans that the show would not be returning for a fourth season. On Sunday, June 19, the last episode ended with "The End", leaving fans confused since there's no official announcement before that the show would end after the third season.

" 'Penny Dreadful' was always intended to go for three years exactly, so I think we've told our story well and thank you for all your support and hanging in there with us," Logan said in the video. In a statement, Logan further explained his decision to wrap the story after three seasons.

"I created 'Penny Dreadful' to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her. For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series. From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally - and triumphantly - finding peace as she returns to her faith."

He added, "To have had fans that have embraced us so passionately has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. This has been a very personal object for me and I will be forever grateful to have worked with the incredible cast led by Eva [Green], Josh [Hartnett] and [Timothy Dalton], our amazing Irish crew, and with out wonderful partners at Showtime and Sky."

To TVLine, Logan insisted that it's the right thing to end the story after three seasons, because "Vanessa's struggle had to end, and it had to end in peace." He said, "Would I have loved to keep telling her story for 10 years? Yes. But that would've been an act of bad faith."

In a behind-the-scenes video, star Eva Green talked about parting ways with her character. "I'm going to miss Vanessa. It's going to be hard to kind of leave her behind. To be able to play such a beautiful character is a gift for an actor and I've been so lucky," she said.

In the end, Ethan (Josh Hartnett) had to kill his love interest Vanessa. "It's inevitable that their conclusions have to be intertwined," said the actor. "It's not the way Ethan wanted it to end, of course. He wants to take care of Vanessa. He's always wanted to take care of Vanessa. And it becomes clear that this is the only way he can actually do that."
