BET Awards Taps Janelle Monae, D'Angelo and Sheila E. for Prince Tribute

After dissing Madonna's performance at last month's BBMAs, BET Awards hires the singers for what they've promised will be 'the greatest Prince tribute ever.'

AceShowbiz - Like most of Prince fans out there, BET wasn't impressed with Madonna's performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards last moth. Now, the network has announced the line-up of performers for their own tribute to the late music icon at the upcoming BET Awards.

On Tuesday, June 7, the day Prince would've turned 58, BET revealed that they'd hired the likes of Janelle Monae, D'Angelo, The Roots as well as the Purple One's ex-fiancee Sheila E. for what they promised would be "the greatest Prince tribute ever." The singers will also be joined by other yet-to-be-announced musicians during the special live performance.

Prince died from a fentanyl overdose at his home in Minnesota back in April. To honor the singer, Madonna covered "Nothing Compares 2 U" and brought out Stevie Wonder for "Purple Rain" during May's Billboard Music Awards.

Her performance, however, received lots of negative reviews from critics, including BET Awards which immediately dropped a shady promo for their own Prince tribute. "Yeah, we saw that. Don't worry. We got you," read a message in the video.

Defending her performance, Madge told people on social media to "deal with it." She added, "Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age Gender or skin Color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever."

She has also responded to BET's criticism, recently sharing a photo of her wearing a jacket she said was given to her by Prince. She captioned it, "Wearing the jacket Prince gave me back in the day without permission from BET. Lol! Good Bless America."

The 2016 BET Awards is airing on BET on Sunday, June 26, at 8 P.M. ET.
