At a science fiction and fantasy convention in Baltimore, the book author shares an interesting detail of the female warrior's ancestry.

AceShowbiz - George R. R. Martin has given Brienne of Tarth a nice backstory. While attending Balticon, an annual science fiction and fantasy convention in Baltimore, the book author read a new chapter from the upcoming novel "The Winds of Winter" which includes a tidbit about the female warrior, played by Gwendoline Christie on the HBO show.

Martin announced to the crowd that Brienne is the descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall, who was briefly mentioned by Joffrey when he was flipping through the history of the knights of the Kingsguard in season 4 of "Game of Thrones". While Ser Duncan has never been addressed on the show besides that moment, Martin has written a series of novellas about Ser Duncan and his squire Egg.

Duncan and Brienne share some similarities. They're both tall and his fighting prowess and chivalry are also inherited by his female descendant. A humble man, Duncan who lived decades before the events of the TV series was the companion to Aego V Targaryen before the latter became a king on the Iron Throne.
