The hunk will star and executive produce 'The Janson Directive', which will be the first of several other movies created for Universal based on the late author's novels.

AceShowbiz - Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is helping launch a new cinematic universe. Universal Pictures has teamed up with Captivate Entertainment and writer James Vanderbilt as well as his partners at Mythology Entertainment to create a series of movies based on Robert Ludlum's novels. The first film in the universe is "The Janson Directive" that's starring the hunky actor.

Written by Vanderbilt along with Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, the pic follows a former black-ops agent turned private security contractor who is framed for a terrible crime and forced to team up with the protege sent to kill him in order to survive.

The Rock is super excited to be part of the project, which he will also executive produce. In a statement to THR, which first reported the news, the "Baywatch" star said, " 'The Janson Directive' is classic Robert Ludlum. Sharp, edgy and layered storylines."

"The character is complex, conflicted, bad ass and lethal - I can't wait to sink my teeth into this and bring him to life. Between Jamie, Akiva, Captivate and Universal, it's an exciting time to help produce and build out this awesome Ludlum universe," he added.

Robert Ludlum passed away in 2001. He was the author of 27 novels, including the books that inspired Universal's "Bourne" movies. Vanderbilt will also write two more stories based on the author's other novels, which have not been named. Yet-to-be-hired writers will then adapt them into screenplays.
