Rebecca Romijn: Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid Are Not True Supermodels
Celebrity

The former model comments on the current trend of fashion magazines hiring social media-savvy celebrities for their covers.

AceShowbiz - Speaking as someone who has been in the business for a long time, Rebecca Romijn thinks the current batch of models are not really filling the shoes. The 43-year-old, who had walked the Victoria's Secret runway and graced Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers, called them non "legitimate fashion people."

Romijn was doing an interview with Entertainment Tonight when she was asked about the new crop of models in the business who are "more famous for their social media presence than their runway experience" such as Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Romijn thought social media played no role in sale. "No one has proven yet that numbers of followers translates to revenue. So it is frustrating," she said.

And Romijn was not alone. "I know a lot of people - legitimate fashion people - can't stand it. Hate it that these, you know, social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion. They are not true supermodels," she said.

But she can't help but to feel the trend growing stronger. "And the thing is, I have always looked to Vogue magazine to lead the way, not be a follower," she continued. "I rely on Vogue to set the standard, not follow what everybody else is doing. So I have been disappointed that fashion magazines have been supporting this trend of social media stars to set our style standards. But it will change; fashion always does."
